A new platform based on Sequencing-By-Synthesis (SBS) has been developed, it is possible to offer a range of expression profiling and small RNA analysis based on its Massively Parallel Signature Sequencing (MPSS™) technology. Both technologies (MPSS™ and SBS) leverage massively parallel sequencing of short DNA and cDNA fragments to generate data from millions of fragments simultaneously.

However, by leveraging its Clonal Single Molecule Array™ technology and reversible terminator chemistry, Solexa's SBS approach is anticipated to generate up to one billion bases of data per run at costs far more economical than that of MPSS. Given the data density and economical advantages of SBS over MPSS, Solexa plans on transitioning its MPSS-based service offerings to SBS.
